Who Was There?
A Christmas Poem:
Who Was There?
Who was there that first Christmas Day?
Who saw the baby lying in the hay?
‘I,’ said the cow with the crumpled horn.
‘I was there when the baby was born.’
‘I,’ said the owl from his perch up high.
‘I heard the baby give his first cry.’
‘I,’ said the spider, ‘As I spun my thread.
I saw Mary stroke the baby’s head.’
‘I,’ said the donkey, ‘I was there.
I saw the shepherds kneel in prayer.’
‘I,’ said the sheep, ‘I saw the star
And followed the wise men from afar.’
We were all there that first Christmas Day.
We saw the baby asleep in the hay.
